One Year Passes and Another Begins

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

I was wondering how to open this year’s first post. Should I simply write Happy New Year with balloon fonts? Perhaps draw the New Year baby coming onto the scene? It did not seem an appropriate message for the time. Actually it is… but not for me. A scripture popped into my head. Checking on it found it to be an appropriate response to last year’s dilemmas and tests. It also speaks to faith in the year to come. A purpose! A destiny? So I will share it with you:

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The Holy Bible, New King James Version, (Nashville, Tennessee: Thomas Nelson, Inc.) 1982.

May your journey this year bring you ever closer to the prize as you press toward your goal and calling this year.

Have a “Blessed New Year!”

Christmas Givers

Friday, December 24th, 2010

The first Christmas Giver was God our Father. The Gift? The Word of God become flesh. The Reason? To show the way to peace with God and make that way possible. Welcome Jesus!

The Second Christmas Giver was Saint Nicholas, bishop of the early church. The gift? Three small sacks of money. The Reason? Dowry for three daughters of a poor parishioner. Tenderly placed into their stockings, that were hung up by the fireplace with care to dry.

Another Christmas there was Santa Claus. The gift? Promises of gifts to all good boys or girls. The reason? A turn of the 20th century marketing ploy to increase year end sales.

And lastly? The real Santa Claus? The gift? Everything with a bottle of Coke to wash it all down. The reason? All things do go better with coke. Don’t be fooled. The real Santa has a coke in his right hand… always!

The Real Santa Claus

And Absolutely finally… Santa Clones. The gift? What actually gets put under the tree. The reason? Santa can’t get to the global market economy without help from parents.

So there you have it. A snapshot of Christmas. Just remember… without the first there would be no reason to celebrate this season.

Merry Christmas!

The Life Recovery Bible

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

In our Recovery Group we use “The Life Recovery Bible” for our study purposes. I just finished reading through the biblical text. It uses a copy of the “New Living Translation.” It is from Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Of course if you were to go out and buy a copy today it will use a different translation, though I don’t know the version at this time.

It is a special book designed for twelve step programs. Besides a bible it also has copious amounts of comments at the bottom of the page. Actually there are more comments than biblical text. At the back of the book is a large topical index. What else?

Recovery profiles on the main characters of the bible.
Twelve step devotionals.
Recovery Principle Devotionals.
Serenity Prayer Devotionals.
Recovery Reflections.

Suffice it to say there is so much material it would take a long time to work your way through this book taking the time to do it properly. I may be able to start attending the group out of “Crossfire Assembly” on King St W in Hamilton Ontario.

Now as for the particular translation. I believe it would be a good bible for those who have a grade ten education or better. As with all translations it comes in its own flavour. If it were say, ice cream, something green that tastes minty and has a few crushed nuts sprinkled throughout. Overall it meets its purpose for being an easy read though it does take certain liberties in translation. Of course some would call it a transliteration.

As for a general purpose bible? No, there are more bibles, even “New Living Translations”, that would be better for the average reader. If however you are working in a recovery group… trying to overcome compulsive/obsessive/addictive behaviour… this book is a real gem.

A Hate Link… Really?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A friend of mine recently sent this link to me:

One Brit’s opinion about Radical Islam

I’ve heard of the flack this friend of mine got from some people because she sent this link to a few people. Intrigued I clicked on the link so I could have first hand info on what this guy said. Six minutes of some Brit (Aussie?) giving his opinion on the problems with Islam. And what did I think? … very mild dialogue. People got upset over what this guy said? With what is happening in the world today as a result of a renewed flame of Islamic conservatism this guy’s monologue was tame. Warnings (fact based warnings) need to be shouted from the roof-tops.

I’ve read an English version of the Koran. It has its errors and prejudices (my opinion). The real problem with Islam is not the Koran but with the “hadith” (I hope I spelled that correctly). These are all the sayings attributed to Mohammed. This is where true hatred and prejudice can be found. It alone twists the Koran into an unrecognizable mass. The venom we think is in the Koran is there in the hadith. I have read only small portions of the hadith, enough to know, that they speak a different language. The protections in the Koran (for Jews and Christians) are stripped away in the hadith.

This is nothing new. The extra writings of later writers bring disrepute to the original message. Don’t get me wrong… the Koran has errors in it and should be placed under the blanket of “a different gospel” to be considered “anathema” by bible believing Christians. Yet what the conservative Islamist (radical) believes is not the pure Koran but that hybrid created by others to suit their own ends at the time.

They are a danger and need to be exposed. That is what the fellow in England has done. A rather mild expose at that. Guess those who are complaining are too thin skinned or too PC to see the threat. Of course many Jews in 1930’s Europe couldn’t or wouldn’t believe the warnings that some people made during their time.

In the end I do not believe that it will end well. The radical(?) Islamists will cause more pain and death. Some of the people of those countries will respond (over-respond) and isolate, jail, deport, beat and kill in response. Another Godless right wing will arise and a “kristallnacht” aimed at Muslims and/or Jews will occur. Perhaps into this mix the long awaited Antichrist will step in and bring that false peace we know is coming.

You can’t get any more PC than that!

ps: I believe that all Jews, Christians, Muslims and all others need to be protected from the excesses of radicals from any viewpoint, religious or secular. The free exercise of religion is a hallmark of the west. A person needs to be free to choose who they follow based on knowledge and revelation. Those who would deny this freedom are the true enemy of all faiths and peoples.

How Long Oh Lord?

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

13Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14“And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15“Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. 16“But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
The Holy Bible, New King James Version, (Nashville, Tennessee: Thomas Nelson, Inc.) 1982.

So I had a small epiphany this afternoon. I was watching John Hagee on television. The subject doesn’t matter. What he quoted did. There is that passage above from Genesis 15 where God is talking to Abraham about the children of Israel going to spend 400 years in Egypt. What I found strange and did not understand was the use of the term “in the fourth generation” they will come out. It was one of those things I could not understand. A generation is 100 years long? It is one of those things that you read and put off understanding to the future.

Oh yes, the epiphany? It doesn’t matter why God calls it “the fourth generation.” It is that he does. It puts me in remembrance of what a writer of an epistle wrote “that one year is as a thousand and a thousand as one year.” Something is simply because God calls it that way.

So what does this have to do with anything for us today?

Remember that Jesus talking to his disciples on the night he was betrayed said to them that “this generation” that would see the signs he just talked about would not pass away till everything was fulfilled. I have seen many people try to figure out the length of this generation. Take all those listed in Matthew’s genealogy and divide that into the years that passed. Do the same for Luke’s genealogy. Or take three score and ten. Or?

The first use of time and generation is Genesis 15. Why not simply take what God has said and use that for the time scale. If Israel became a nation in 1948. If Jerusalem was taken back in the 1967. Using one of those dates as the start of the prophetic clock then Jesus could be returning anytime before 2048 or 2067. That certainly stretches out the clock.

So what does this mean? We could have a much longer time to wait for the appearing in the sky. The rapture could be after I die. Yet it is during this generation. Could be anytime soon…

So keep looking up.

Crossfire Open House

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This past weekend Crossfire had an open house and a grand opening service in our new building. A lot of work and sacrifice went into getting the building ready. I have been injured the last 2 months and haven’t been able to make any contributions of time or elbow grease. Yet Sunday morning the pastoral staff allowed me to participate.

I wasn’t there. I was at home. As I lay in my bed early Sunday morning my thoughts turned to the church and what was happening that day. Words came to mind. After a bit of mulling over what was coming to me I got up and went to the computer. I wrote down those words, printed them out and sent them to the pastoral staff by my wife’s hand. They graciously read my comments to the church after the worship service. Here is what I wrote:

In the last century of the last millennium
God reached down and stepped onto
the earth where we stand today.
His people erected a building.
Their hearts were touched by God.
From here they stepped out
Into the community
And beyond to the world.

This day,
in a new century
of a new millennium,
a new generation stands
in this footstep of God.
If you incline your hearts to Him,
He will be faithful to fulfill
all the promises He has made.

You too will step out
into the community
and beyond to the world.
Through you He will show
His Power
His Wisdom
His Love.

You will become
a lamp on a hill
whose light will shine forth
for all to see.
God bless you all
on this day of
New Beginnings.

I wasn’t there but by allowing my words to be spoken… I was there in spirit. Thank you Roy and Patti.

Agents of Intolerance?

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

taken from my comment post at runningpastor

I usually get tired of the old complaint that Christians (evangelical) are dumb hicks with an axe to grind and not above violence in the name of God. This usually comes from people who are bigoted themselves. The brush they use to tar us is the same brush that created them in their own image.

What is sad is that it isn’t always the people on the left. You can see it rising in the aftermath of the US election. The “right” are looking for reasons why they lost. They point their finger once again to “those agents of intolerance” the evangelical Christian.

Is it surprising that we are the whipping boy of the non-christian right and most of the left? There is that scripture that says they will think us weird because we don’t run with the same excess as they do. Another, we are in the light and the darkness hates us because they don’t and can’t understand us.

Fortunately for us, most people are somewhere in the middle. They take John (Lennon’s) scripture to heart… Live and let live. It does get tiring that the mud that some sling is aimed at Christians. On occassion we deserve it. But most of the time we don’t. I must tell you… the teflon coating I’ve been given by the Spirit sometimes wears a bit thin. Hate, their hate, can do that. And sometimes, just sometimes, I respond in kind… sigh!

Winter Lily

Winter Lily

Easter is just around the corner. A lily we have in the back sunroom has decided to give us a show. It hasn’t bloomed once since we got it a couple of years ago. In the midst of the snow storms it started to put forth its flowers for the first time. Perhaps this is to symbolize a new beginning this Easter holiday. When we not only celebrate the resurrection of our Lord but the resurrection of purpose, dreams and a new life.

If we would only die to self we would live for and in Jesus.

The Trinity

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I got an email today from someone having a problem with a page I wrote titled He who comes to God must believe that He is.

This is what he wrote:

it all started out so good but, how do you get “And these three are one, and are each one, God” ? how do you deal with these scriptures: 1.here o israel the lord thy god is one lord.: 2. one lord one faith and one baptism.:3. one god and father of all.:4 and his name shall be called wonderful……….everlasting father.5.god is spirit and they that worship him must do so in spirit and in truth. my point is i do believe that you must first believe that god is but after you need to seek god for the understanding of who is. i know that some say the trinity is mystery but it’s one that we should not even have to try to solve because to understand the oneness of god is to truly learn of gods’ love. he said he looked for a man and could not find one so his own arm has gotten him this salvation. no greater love than this that a man would lay down his life for his friend. we know god is not a man but he took upon himself the form of a servant and humbled himself even to death on the cross. isaiah writes i even i am he and besides me there is no savior. i conclude that trinity makes no sense at all and to believe in one would cause us to question who is the father of jesus the holy ghost that overshadowed mary or the father that said this is my beloved son in whom i’m well pleased.

Here was my response:

Thanks for writing. I read your email with interest. The scriptures you have used below are all valid. I will not dispute with you what they mean. A simple reading explains what each of those references mean. I accept what they say.

In my page that you read I also use scriptures. I will honestly expect you to read them with the same determination you used when pointing out your own scriptures. I have laid out for you the scriptures themselves and then I go further and point out to you what they mean to me. The conclusion I wrote about is the one that I believe is right.

Does this mean that I think you are wrong? No, not according to the scriptures you have used. The question then becomes; “what of the scriptures that Joe quotes?” In the beginning was the Word etc… is John’s way of saying that the Jesus he saw in the flesh is the same person who said… “let there be light” in Genesis.

The question you need to ask yourself is, “do I use all the scriptures to understand what God says about himself?” I know this is a hard question to honestly answer. I have struggled through years of searching to understand “the mystery.” There came a point for me when I had to simply believe what the scriptures revealed… all of them… and accept that your core statement “hear O Israel, the Lord is One” and one of mine “in the beginning… the Word was God” and “became flesh.” Do they seem at odds with each other? Of course they do. Does that mean one or the other is wrong? No, they are both right.

I would like you to know the Jesus that I know. That comes from revelation. Not because I am smart or clever or specially holy, I am not, it comes from God the Father. I needed to stretch “my faith” to accept what the bible declares. Read my page again and then pray.

Like the scriptures say, “God is the rewarder of those that diligently seek him” (which is the next page in the series).

May God bless your continued search for the truth… wherever He may lead you.

I am interested in knowing what you think on the subject. Ahem… play nice (as Patti says).

Ex-Gays study, Jones and Yarhouse

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I was listening to the 700 club on television today. Their theme was sexuality and their main story was about a study done by Jones and Yarhouse on the conversion success of homosexuals participating in gay recovery ministries.

The short story is this… some gays can change a lot, some a little, some not at all and some simply enter the celibate life. Quite a mix bag of results. Yet the scientific(?) community says that changing sexual orientation is not possible but can only lead to mental harm. This study shows that the truth is somewhere else. Though the sample community was small it shows that the homosexual may have room to maneuver.

Personally I view homosexuality as no different than any other type of obsessive, compulsive and/or addictive (OCA) behaviour. There are degrees of involvement. I was a weekend alcoholic. The rest of the week I was fine and abstained from drinking but on weekends I would start drinking friday evening and wouldn’t stop until early sunday morning… if then.

What other behaviour can count as obsessive, compulsive and/or addictive. Gosh, everything under the sun including religion. Of course there are groups where the OCA behaviour would be accepted. They flock together: druggies with druggies, alcoholics with alcoholics, homosexuals with homosexuals, and the list goes on and on.

Hopefully the church, or should I say a church, is the one place that a person can go to get the help they need to overcome their personal demon. There doesn’t need to be pointing fingers or shouts to repent. There needs to be understanding and a willingness to come alongside those who are trapped and help them to overcome the problem they face. This could take years of counselling to immediate conversion or anything in between.

What the person who needs help must admit is that their actions are wrong. Then seek the help of a loving church. If the church will not admit that certain behaviours are wrong then they condemn the OCA to his/her lifestyle. Those who think there is nothing wrong with their behaviour should be given a time to repent (change their minds about it).  If not, by-by. Yet if the church throws out the OCA who wants to change then they do a dis-service not only to the person seeking help but forget who it is that God came to save.

In all this we must show God’s grace toward the sinner and God’s love for the sinner. Whatever OCA a person has, their only true help comes from God and usually that means through a local church.

OK, that was two cents worth. What is your position on homosexuality or any other OCA activity?
