Broken Hearts and Politics – the Gabrielle Giffords Shooting

January 11th, 2011

When I first heard of the mass shooting in Arizona I said to myself another horrific crime with a gun. Terrorist? Anarchist? Disillusioned fool? Someone trying to impress a woman? A seeker of fame? Or more likely… a madman?

Then I heard about the 18 who were shot and the six of them that had died. From a nine year old to a grandmother, a judge and a congresswoman, and those who were unfortunate enough to be in the area. The heartache of the families as the extent of this mini massacre are revealed. I can’t begin to comprehend the anguish of soul.

There are many that put on a consoling face and ask for peace and quiet in this time of tragedy. Is it a mask? For most, no. Yet I have heard a steady stream of who is to blame for providing the fuel that waited for the spark called Jared Loughner. From Sarah Palin’s website with its target symbols to the angry rhetoric voiced in congress and of course conservative talk radio all seem to be brushed as the villains in the story that is building. What did the right do to inflame this man to commit such violence?

What I have found out is that Gabrielle Giffords is what is called a blue dog democrat. A member of the blue dog democrats in the 2010 congress. A moderate that almost dislikes the abuses of the far left as the middle of the road republicans do. A two term server who fought a really tough race to win a third term. She was out at a mall to meet her constituents. One man came to meet with her for a different purpose.

Jared Loughner is not a right wing fanatic. His politics are liberal… I have to think twice on that one. Two of the books he read were Mein Kamph and The Communist Manifesto. Two books of which I have also read. The first taking National Socialism and explaining how to make things happen to gain and hold power to change the course of a nation hemorrhaging life because of the Treaty of Versailles. The other, a political discourse to change a world’s politics, to bring about a workers’ utopia. That also would bring about violent other throw of the status quo. Is this the type of thinking that was going through this man’s mind?

It is said that several years ago Jared had the chance to talk to Gabrielle. He walked away from her disappointed… angry? This blue dog democrat certainly couldn’t understand the aspirations and hopes of this far to the left liberal. How could she? Yet Jared thought she would understand. That in some twisted way they were kindred spirits. After all, look at the Obama and far left democratic agenda. Listen to the lies, manipulation and verbal attacks of the recent campaigns. Pay attention to the politics on the hill. Of course it is unfair. It is also a bit unfair of me to mention it. How about this bit of speech… “if they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” Am I to infer then that Obama, who spoke those words, really meant for a Jared Loughner to take a gun and shoot people who are the opponents of his world vision? Specially those who would put a knife to his dream’s fulfilment? Of course not.

I am the type of man that likes to get the facts of an event before I begin to judge what happened. I try to vet some of the info from both sides of an argument. I wish more people would do that. Too few of us do. With Twitter type apps a word spreads like wildfire (going viral?) And some take it for truth. It does seem that some liberal democrats have found the (political) gun they want to bring to the (political) knife fight. This is sad. We need to lay aside “politics as usual.” We should grieve with the hurting families and for those suffering trauma. The congress should make no attempt to pass a law that will affect everyone because of the crazed(?) act of one individual. Sadly I think they will try. We should not try and stifle free speech. And as much as is in us… we should try to live in peace with those around us. Political discourse does not have to be dirty, trashy, deadly…

One Year Passes and Another Begins

January 1st, 2011

I was wondering how to open this year’s first post. Should I simply write Happy New Year with balloon fonts? Perhaps draw the New Year baby coming onto the scene? It did not seem an appropriate message for the time. Actually it is… but not for me. A scripture popped into my head. Checking on it found it to be an appropriate response to last year’s dilemmas and tests. It also speaks to faith in the year to come. A purpose! A destiny? So I will share it with you:

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The Holy Bible, New King James Version, (Nashville, Tennessee: Thomas Nelson, Inc.) 1982.

May your journey this year bring you ever closer to the prize as you press toward your goal and calling this year.

Have a “Blessed New Year!”

Christmas Givers

December 24th, 2010

The first Christmas Giver was God our Father. The Gift? The Word of God become flesh. The Reason? To show the way to peace with God and make that way possible. Welcome Jesus!

The Second Christmas Giver was Saint Nicholas, bishop of the early church. The gift? Three small sacks of money. The Reason? Dowry for three daughters of a poor parishioner. Tenderly placed into their stockings, that were hung up by the fireplace with care to dry.

Another Christmas there was Santa Claus. The gift? Promises of gifts to all good boys or girls. The reason? A turn of the 20th century marketing ploy to increase year end sales.

And lastly? The real Santa Claus? The gift? Everything with a bottle of Coke to wash it all down. The reason? All things do go better with coke. Don’t be fooled. The real Santa has a coke in his right hand… always!

The Real Santa Claus

And Absolutely finally… Santa Clones. The gift? What actually gets put under the tree. The reason? Santa can’t get to the global market economy without help from parents.

So there you have it. A snapshot of Christmas. Just remember… without the first there would be no reason to celebrate this season.

Merry Christmas!

My First Car

December 18th, 2010

I remember a time when I was two, about to turn three. I was sitting in my red car. The old type with the back and forth power peddles. When I pumped my plump little legs I could achieve a blistering pace. Almost, almost I could keep up with my dad walking down the street. Oh, blistering pace? If I kept it up my heels would blister. I was always striving to achieve a new land speed record. Never quite making it.

Then one day I equipped my car with a kinetic initiator drive. Wow! Such speed! Of course this kinetic initiator drive, K.I.D. for short, was my best friend and neighbour Ernest Greenwald. He would get behind my little red car and when I said go he would unleash massive power. The peddles by my feet would rattle so fast I would have to keep my feet off of them. I traveled for three hot rods. (For those of you not brought up in with the imperial measurement system that’s about fifteen meters in length.) An impressive distance for a drag race.

driving my first little car aided by a friend

Vrooommm!

Of course to be fair we would swap positions so both of us could share the thrill and excitement of high speed racing. Yup, white knuckled driving as we accelerated to almost three miles per hour. Again, that would be five kilometers per hour for the imperially challenged. Simple pleasures for simple times. It also was good practice for my first real car that needed a really big K.I.D. to push start the car.

Now I am older and drive a much better car. Yet sometimes I long for my first love. It just seemed to be so much grander.

Depression = Inertia

December 10th, 2010

Life is like physics!

My body at rest…

tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an equal and opposite force. My God (who is greater than my circumstance) and my wife (who is greater than me) 🙂

My body in motion…

tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an equal and opposite force. Satan (who is not that great) and my life circumstance (which is too often grating) 🙁

Need more 🙂 and less 🙁

Space travel goes Green

Tree cut to show an image of a rocket ship

The Royal Botanical Gardens goes green with their new Space Shuttle.

This shot was taken today at the RBG Arboretum in Hamilton Ontario. I did not read the plaque on the other side… I went with what it first appeared to me to be. In the last few years they have allowed artists to come in and “create” works of art with the materials on hand.

Back of the Bus?

October 26th, 2010

Recently Obama made a statement and this image popped into my head. The image?

back of the bus statement

Are you a republican? You can come for the ride but you gotta sit in the back of the bus.

What he said at a recent campaign rally was this:

“We don’t mind the republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in the back.”

Didn’t think I would hear such a statement from a sitting President, specially since it is a loaded statement for anyone of colour. Yep, Montgomery Alabama 1955.

Liberal Democrat vs The Tea Party

October 5th, 2010

Recently I was channel surfing and came across a CNN political discussion panel: the right and left plus a commentator and the program’s star. Back and forth I surfed between my program and the CNN discussion during commercials. What did the female liberal democrat say about The Tea Party?

Female Liberal Democrat Speaks Out

“I haven’t met a tea partier yet with half a brain.”

CNN… the most trusted name in news? More like silly entertainment themes hosted and populated by bullies who hate well thought out discussions or a dialogue to enlighten the mind. It does grow very tiring. The biggest abusers seem to be those on the left.

Earthquake? Earthquake!

June 23rd, 2010

So I was just finishing sending an email to Netfirms complaining about my stats not being registered/counted correctly. Hit send. Then the desk and computer started shaking. The leaves of the plants in the office were moving but the window was closed. The cat came running into the room with a very strange look on her face. Five, perhaps ten seconds of confusion. Was it an earthquake? Big truck coming down the road? My house foundation giving away?

I went outside to confer with the neighbours. Not a soul in site. Perhaps it is a truck or the house? Then one neighbour appeared. Nothing she says. Waiting a few more seconds and lo! People started to appear at their doors like turtles popping their heads out for a look. Yep, everyone’s house did the shimmy shimmy shake. Well, except for my next door neighbour. Haven’t felt a tremor in over ten years. A bit exciting. Oh! I forgot to stand in the doorway. Too busy looking at everything moving on its own.

So it will be in the news. Probably centered somewhere south-south-west of my home. That would be the Pennsylvania/Ohio border area. Guess I’ll find that out the news tonight.

You read it here first! Well, if you read nothing else, or watch TV or listen to the radio or have a neighbour. Still, perhaps someone read it here first. I know I did. 😉

WordPress 3.0

June 17th, 2010

A major update for wordpress. Looks a bit different. I just hope that some of the bug fixes are the ones that annoy me. I like the new standard screen, a man walking in the country. Ah, I only wish I could do that. Page loads wide though. Ah, what the heck, need some changes and if my life refuses to change then at least my blog can.

😉

So as you can guess I went back to my old format for wordpress. I guess in the end I like the familiar more than the novelty. Plus a few items in the side column were missing. So I guess my blog stays the same… I am the one who needs to change.
🙂
