Obama and the Stock Market

February 20th, 2009

So, the stock market has been going down sharply the last couple of days. It is no surprise to me. The $780b stimulus package is huge. Yet the people who work the money don’t believe that the plan is going to work. Why? Perhaps for the same reason I have… Don’t trust the Democrats in both houses… don’t believe and don’t trust Obama to really be able to handle this.

I saw it coming. When? Back when Obama was still running for the presidency. At first I thought it was my imagination. So I started to pay a little more attention to who was ahead during the Democrats primaries and caucuses. Later I observed the action between Obama and McCain. Seemed like every time Obama took the lead prior to the convention and later the run for the office the New York Stock Exchange took a tumble. If he did badly? The exchange would go up.

I took this to mean that if Obama won the election the money people would be careful how they invested or in this case divested their holdings. Am I saying that the financial troubles we are in are Obama’s fault? Absolutely not. Obama’s rallying cry was “Yes We Can.” However the people who hold the purse strings are saying “No We Can’t.”

To get out of this mess you first need to understand what got us into this mess. Correct those things no matter how politically dangerous it would be. Then take “targeted and timely” measures to stimulate the economy. They have done the stimulus first… and it seems truly understanding how we got here is being avoided. Sadly for many people this will be a rough ride.

Father, there is a way that seems right to a man but the end is death. Father, there is a way out. They don’t see it yet. Change their hearts Lord… open their eyes… so that they see, understand and repent. Watch over your people Father… give them the knowledge to stay ahead of this problem and where they cannot… provide for us. In Jesus name…

From Russia with Love

February 17th, 2009

There are Russians out there that have a passion for my site. They are always commenting on how cool my blog name and address are. They wish they could add my site to their rss readers. They love my site so much that they say the same thing several times a day.

Wait a minute…

These comments are the same…

Ah ha! They have the exact same IP. Different names… Different emails… Same IP!

Rats… it’s not an open door to evangelising the land of Gog and Magog. It is simply SPAM from one source.

Time to block the IP. Guess what? They will be back in less than a week with a slightly different IP. Professing their love for my site once again. I just wish they weren’t that persistent.

Updating WordPress

February 14th, 2009

In wordpress 2.7, which I have on my server, they made it possible to do automatic updates. Today was my first time using it. Top of the page they said version 2.7.1 was available. They had a link to hit to auto update. Ah… that was so nice. It did everything. It took about two minutes of absolute silence and then the page changed saying it was done. This is the improvement I have been waiting for so long. So no more posts about updating… I hope… because it couldn’t be easier or less stressful.

The Store

February 11th, 2009

There was never any guess what was supposed to happen when I left the store. It was well planned out long before this moment. Yet, the execution was off. That is why the man standing behind me got the bullet that was meant for me. Just one more instance of a person being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The second shot was not planned. I could hear the sonic boom of the round missing my head by inches. This round too found an unplanned for target. The mannequin in the store window had its head explode into a cloud of dust. My pulse rate climbed with each shot. Sweat began to cloud my vision as the stinging liquid found my eyes. A quick and fevered look to find the person who is so intent on ending my life. Most people were scattering in every direction. Some fell to the ground where they stood too frightened to move. Out of the corner of my eye I see an arm rising toward me and I throw myself to the left in a roll and jumped back into the store. The next round passed through the space I just vacated. I try hiding behind a chair. Another round slams into the chair that I am hiding behind. It rips through the fabric. Tiny specs of molten polyester sting my cheeks and eyes, the round passing that close to my face. I crawl along the floor looking for a better place to hide. A quick look reveals that my antagonist is angry, frustrated and marching toward me. He ejects the clip from his firearm and slams a new magazine into the handle. He actions the slide and a new round chambers. A new attack as he rushes forward. Half standing half crawling I move toward the exit. I hit the door running. I slam into the door but it does not give. Someone has the door locked against fire code rules. I turn to see a man standing in the doorway of the store. He begins to walk closer to me. His arm begins to rise. I see the nickel plated gun in his hand. I can’t run left or right. I am trapped by this madman. Ten feet from me. His mouth begins to form a smile. He slows. The gun is now pressed to my forehead. I look into his eyes. Mere slits show only the black of his pupils. “Why” I stammer. He smiles broadly. “Asshole” he whispers. I don’t hear the click of the hammer. Nor do I hear the roar or see the flash. I am dead before I hit the floor. My brain matter splattered against the unyielding exit. Above my body I float waiting for… what? My next incarnation of life? A band of angels coming to get me? Perhaps a light at the end of the tunnel? I don’t know. All I can think of is, “what did my twin brother do now?”

Obama – the President?

A New Kind of Presidential Leadership

A New Kind of Presidential Leadership

I can just imagine what Canadians are thinking about Barak Obama. Our country, being mostly liberal, thought George Bush was an idiot anti-christ. Well, the conservative in me thinks that Bush will one day be heralded as one of the great Presidents. But Obama? No, not the anti-christ, not this liberal left leaning icon. No, they think of him as a messiah ready to usher in a golden age.

Personally I hope that he does well. The world economy needs him to do well. But his stimulus plan? Our stimulus plan? A big mistake. A cornucopia of spending initiatives that will break the heart, (and bank-account) of those who have been saving for retirement. Wait till the hyper inflation kicks in down the road.

Before the economy tanked I thought liberal programs were going to be Obama’s legacy of sin and death. Now he will be able to expand his legacy by ushering in poverty.

The Last Jihad by Joel C Rosenberg

The Last Jihad by Joel C Rosenberg

This is the first book in a series. It was written just prior to the 9/11 attack. The author shelved the book for a year. In 2002 he brought the book to the publishers and it went into printing. Why the delay? Because what he was writing about was a work of fiction that almost came true.

We know the history of what happened on 9/11 and what the US did in response. That the war on terror did not stop until it included Iraq. In this story, written before the US went to war in Iraq, Joel wrote this story. It is interesting to see how he thought the war on terror was going to unfold.

If you want to know one possible scenario, what could have happened if the US didn’t invade Iraq when it did, then this is a good story.

I quickly read through the book. It is was quite enjoyable. I recommend it.

The mirror reveals all

January 10th, 2009

Last night, as Linda was preparing for bed, I went to straighten the sheets and the blankets. I started on my side to tuck in the blankets under the mattress at the foot of the bed. Then I carefully lined up the sheet with the blanket and smoothed it down. I then go around the bed and do the same on her side. As I headed for the hallway I have to pass a large mirror on my left. I took a quick peek at myself.

Now I usually go about the house shirtless. You see it is too hot in the house for me but perfect for Linda. I say this so you can understand what happened next.

As I passed the mirror my attention was drawn to a dark area on my side. I stopped and lifted my arm. Now my eyesight isn’t too good but I did notice a dark discoloration. I sidled up closer to the mirror. It looked like a very large bruise yet I don’t remember injuring myself. Perhaps it was a bleed under the skin for some other reason. I was getting concerned.

I drew closer to the mirror. O my, was that dirt? How on earth did that happen?

Closer still and the truth was revealed. It was a shadow caused by my ribcage. Now I know I was loosing quite a bit of weight but I never thought I would see my ribcage again.

So, I go to bed happy knowing that there is a body beneath the store of fat I have been carrying for twenty years. Lucky me! 😉

Hamas vs Israel

January 5th, 2009

Hamas, everyday, said hello to Israel by launching a number of rockets into the nearby towns and cities. For seven years they said hello this way. Just think, this is the way they honour a ceasefire. I know that last ceasefire was only for six months. Why did they decide to end it and not merely extend it? Oh, they have a host of reasons they give. Most of those reasons, if not all of them, are hogwash. The reason they fight is because they hate. Hate knows no bounds and will suffer no insult.

Israel, everyday, took care of the wounded. Sometimes they tried to take out the attackers. Sometimes they succeeded. Sometimes they didn’t. Once in awhile they killed or injured non combatants. There were apologies and displays of sorrow when then hurt the innocent. They wanted to keep the ceasefire going. They were willing, begrudgingly, to suffer the losses caused by a handful of Hamas good morning rockets. Yet instead of the continuing bad peace Hamas up the attacks by a ten fold increase. For this reason Israel attacked. Though Israel is causing a lot of damage and deaths, it is limited to Hamas targets. Sadly, they still kill innocents in the crossfire. They sorrow and apologize and will try to help when the battle is over. They fight because they are angry at intransigent men who do not know the way of peace. They fight because the have to, not because they like to.

Over all I think it is sad. The Israelis pulled out of the Gaza strip, unilaterally two years ago, in the hopes that there may be a respite from violence. It was the perfect opportunity for Hamas to show how they can care for their own people. How they could begin to build a just society. How they could control the violence toward Israel. If they would have even done that in part, without rockets being launched, Israel could have become a very helpful friend. Alas Hamas did not take the opportunity. They dug tunnels, they smuggled in weapons, built rockets to kill Israelis. In the fighting now happening Hamas even kills or wounds in the leg Fatah Palestinians when they get in the way.

Perhaps if Hamas were merely angry with Israel peace may have some prospect of becoming a reality. But they are hate-filled people and sadly Israel must do what it is doing. If they succeed. If Hamas is defeated. Then perhaps the Palestinians who remain, and are only angry with Israel, can begin moving toward a peace.

The Secret Trial of Robert E Lee
by Thomas Flemming

January 4th, 2009

The Secret Trial of Robert E Lee by Thomas Flemming
publisher: Tom Doherty Associates

This is the kind of book I enjoy reading… historical fiction. Take a subject. Mix in some historical figures. Weave a story surrounding this event. In this case we are taken to the 1860’s at a time just after the US Civil War. In history, when Robert E Lee surrendered the Northern Virginia Army at Appomattox to general Grant all of Lee’s soldiers were given amnesty for things done during the war. This story proceeds from the standpoint that there was a secret trial of Robert E Lee for treason and various war crimes including the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

In this telling of post war politics there is much information woven into the story. You can begin to grasp the true reasons behind the war. It is also a good view of what elements on the yankee side tried to do following the war. I have been reading bits and pieces about this historical era for decades and find it a true history. The “trial” never happened but the rest of the history did. It is the first book I have read about that time period that reflected my knowledge of those events.

Thomas Flemming is a historian as well as a writer. He weaves a pretty good story laced with historical facts. This is a recommended read.

The Traitor’s Sword by Amanda Hemingway

December 29th, 2008

The Traitor’s Sword by Amanda Hemingway
publisher: Harper Collins

As you may have noticed in the past I do enjoy Sci-fi and Fantasy novels. Linda knows this as well. So for Christmas she bought me a wide selection of books. One of them is called “The Traitor’s Sword.” She did not know this at the time that the story is a trilogy, a set of three books, and that “The Traitor’s Sword” was the second in the series. It didn’t take me long to figure out that there must have been a previous book and this one was later in the series. Normally I would just set the book aside until I got the first and then read them in order. First though, I wanted to read enough to tell me if I wanted the series or not.

I read the first chapter. This was an introduction to characters. Who they were, what they did, and how the story was generally set up. The premise of the book is that magic is real. The hero, a thirteen year old boy, is the champion of the story. His unique ability is to dream himself into an alternate universe. He can take part in the activities there. In the first book he obtained an artifact. There are two other artifacts that need to be gathered together so that an enchantment can break the curse in one of the alternate universes.

This book is aimed primarily at younger teens. In one part it is to educate the young mind into the possibility that magic is real. The second chapter opens up on practicing magic and the hero taking his own trips. All of this is rather so-so and doesn’t really go very far… so far… into the occult. Of course it is written so that the fertile imagination of young adults can begin to enter into the reality, if only in fantasy. I found the book rather tame and a bit boring. I was wondering as I was coming to the close of chapter two whether I should continue reading the story. Then came the third last paragraph.

The paragraph starts out with the mother thinking back on when she became pregnant. You see, she didn’t have sex with a man but with some form of spiritual being. She talks about Mary, the mother of Jesus, also becoming pregnant by some spiritual being. Understand, the woman was raped by this malevolent(?) spirit and she wonders if Mary also was raped against her will. Then there is a slap at Gods who need to be worshipped. I can just imagine what would be going through the mind of a young girl as she read this passage.

I stopped reading and looked over to Linda. I read out the paragraph. She became very upset and wanted to destroy the book immediately. I told her I would get rid of it after I wrote this book review. It is rare that I don’t finish a book once I start. Even when I read “Mein Kamph” by Hitler I finished the book… but it took many months of returning to it after putting down numerous times. As a story I could finish the book yet on this rare occasion I will simply drop it in the trash.

The titles of the books in this series are: The Green Stone Grail, The Traitor’s Sword, The Poisoned Crown.

I have no opinion of her other books.
