Upgrading WordPress

So wordpress found a small vulnerability with the last version. “You need to upgrade your wordpress” the message says. Sigh! I remember the heartache trying to move my wordpress program and data to netfirms from powweb. Took the bit between the teeth and stepped into the process. First back-up the database in case something goes wrong. Hmmm… that was too easy. Next download the zip file to my computer. Open it up in another folder. Upload all the contents to your web server. So far seems too easy… way too easy. Went over to my site and everything is working. Huh! It’s working??? No hassels, no problem and no glitches! Everything is in its place?

Gosh, I wish everything worked that easily. It sure was nice for a change. Oh my gosh… I upgraded my site’s program and I feel something strange on my face. Never been there before. Why, it’s a smile. Sigh!

    A smile! How lovely!

A computer change sans glitches is nothing short of a miracle.

I wanted to make a comment on the National House of Prayer Blog, but I had to sign up with WordPress first, because I guess that is different from blogger. Then I had trouble getting back on blogger. I don’t understand all this stuff. Why is everything so complicated?

I don’t know why you would have trouble Dougie… except that you always seem to have trouble. Nothing new though. There are many times I have tried to comment on a blogger account like yours or Patti’s and got an error message.

Part of the problem is how they design the program to begin with. Both Blogger and WordPress have to create so many checks and balances to keep the spammers and others, that would do harm, from making a mess of your blog.

The wordpress I use is on my own server account. I decide what features get incorporated. Of course that means I have to take the extra time to do clean-ups and do manual blocks. That’s my choice. Even then you had trouble with my site on occassion.

So the problem is part programing and part ten thumbs. It’s a wonder that things work at all. 😉

Sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt. I opened my mouth and said: ” What’s WordPress “?

Aww… Don… Asking questions is the sign of a person seeking knowledge. It’s the guys who open their mouths believing they know-it-all that should keep their yaps shut in order to at least maintain the appearance of being wise.

Of course the saying you quote may apply to some.

You have heard of Blogger. It is both a blogging program and the place where you can host your blog for free. WordPress is the same thing. WordPress has its own blogging software that they host on their own web servers. People can sign up for a free account. They take care of upgrading the software when it is needed. You just have to learn the basics and start blogging.

WordPress is also availlable for download for those like myself who want a little more control over how it is presented and run. Of course that means when an upgrade is required or recommended then it is up to myself to back up my data and do the upgrade. Thankfully this last time went very well.
