Robert Downey Jr

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

It has been a rather quiet four months. Just recently I began posting to this blog. I also began sketching after a four month respite. Respite? Call it a bout of depression. Health and stuff… you know. So today I have finished a drawing of Robert Downey Jr. The source was the photo in the Hamilton Spectator, a shot from his role as Sherlock Holmes in the newly released movie. I already placed it on my sketches and drawing site. So I thought I may as well put a copy here. After all, it is a small turning point in my life.

Obama – the President?

A New Kind of Presidential Leadership

A New Kind of Presidential Leadership

I can just imagine what Canadians are thinking about Barak Obama. Our country, being mostly liberal, thought George Bush was an idiot anti-christ. Well, the conservative in me thinks that Bush will one day be heralded as one of the great Presidents. But Obama? No, not the anti-christ, not this liberal left leaning icon. No, they think of him as a messiah ready to usher in a golden age.

Personally I hope that he does well. The world economy needs him to do well. But his stimulus plan? Our stimulus plan? A big mistake. A cornucopia of spending initiatives that will break the heart, (and bank-account) of those who have been saving for retirement. Wait till the hyper inflation kicks in down the road.

Before the economy tanked I thought liberal programs were going to be Obama’s legacy of sin and death. Now he will be able to expand his legacy by ushering in poverty.

Get Rommel by Michael Asher
Cassel Publishing
Historical

My wife bought me a box set of three books. The author is Michael Asher, ex-paratrooper and special forces in the British Army. One of the books I will be reading is a best seller. This book, Get Rommel, isn’t a best seller. At least not by what I have read.

The book covers the creation of special forces during the second world war. They mention their first attempt at using the forces… or should I say the mis-use of forces. He only included this story so that he could introduce some of the players in the “Get Rommel” mission.

Some characters? My gosh, no such luck. It seems to me that anyone who may of had even a small part to play in the mission had their brief history given. I don’t mind getting some background on the major characters but Asher gave little histories on dozens. So much so that I was wondering at points was this supposed to be an exciting historical novel or some dry thesis for a masters diploma. In the end I would say it was a thesis not a novel.

When you think of special forces you think of highly trained, highly motivated professional soldiers. Perhaps in the future they have become that model. In this book it was more like the mis-adventures of Spanky and the Gang.

After reading this book I was tempted to shelve the other two books in some dark corner of the basement. I guess I will try one more book to see if his delivery of a story improves. Though I have to admit, after that first one it has been weeks since I even wanted to read anything at all. If I had to rate this book, one star is bad and five stars was excellent, I would be hard pressed to give it a half star.

Here is my sketch of Rommel.

Winter Lily

Easter is just around the corner. A lily we have in the back sunroom has decided to give us a show. It hasn’t bloomed once since we got it a couple of years ago. In the midst of the snow storms it started to put forth its flowers for the first time. Perhaps this is to symbolize a new beginning this Easter holiday. When we not only celebrate the resurrection of our Lord but the resurrection of purpose, dreams and a new life.

If we would only die to self we would live for and in Jesus.
