The Culture War – opening salvo – the calendar

The Culture War – opening salvo – the calendar

A king Is born! Long Live the King! And with those words a new calendar was started. It did not matter what the kingdom was called. In Rome the calender dates from Julius, then from Augustus and so on. Each subsequent ruler had started his own era. It was like saying in the 7th year of Augustus Caesar. To get the full calendar you had to know the list of succession and how many years long each of the eras were. Other calender systems started with the foundation of their nation. The Hebrew calendar started from year one of mankind’s reign on the earth. Adam started the count and it has been progressing ever since. What do these types of these systems have in common? They represented a turning point in the affairs of men. A singular moment from which all else would progress… for those people under their system for measuring the passing time.

AD and BC

Hundreds of years after the birth of Jesus the Christ a monk decided to change the way he was measuring the passing of the years. Instead of using the years of the current Roman Emperor (era), he decided to begin his calendar from the birth of Jesus (his era). Thus began Anno Domini, The Year of Our Lord, and a simplified way of keeping track of the passage of time was created. Most of the world adopted this method to make it easier for historians and also commerce to work in their respective fields. BC then came about to measure world events that occurred prior to the birth of Jesus. Not everyone who adopted this form of measurement liked the idea that it all started with the birth of a Jew, the founder of Christianity, as the ending of one major era and the beginning of the other.

CE and BCE

Good old Henry the 8th. Wasn’t satisfied with the religion coming from Rome. He couldn’t divorce and marry whom he pleased. So he began his own flavour of religion. The church of England was born. The calendar did not change, after all they still worshipped the same God. Yet shortly after his death a slight change began to appear as to how the calendar dates were referred. It was started by those who did not like the pope and the “papists” who followed his lead. Such a slight change but a reflection of the times (for their politically correct version of time). The change? They dropped the Latin AD and adopted CE (Christian Era) and BCE (Before the Christian Era).

CE and BCE (the second coming)

Second Coming (of unbelief)? A little joke. Yet a new definition came from the Jewish community, in the 18th century of our Lord (but not theirs). They referred to the same calendar not as the start of the Christian Era but as the Common Era and BCE as Before the Common Era. Yet there is no defining moment for why the calendar should be split at that time. The only significant event is still the birth of Jesus. It reflects the heart of the rebellious, it is the age old cry of the wicked “we will not have this man rule over us.” Wicked? Simply those who will not honour or obey the words of a king.

Adoption

As we entered the Era of the Scientist a quiet rebellion against faith began. If it can’t be measured does it really exist? My senses will be the judge of reality and later my sensors would add to that reality. All else, they say, is an example of hocus-pocus. It is a magic incantation, a trick to fool the gullible. It is like the priestly words spoken at communion to change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. It is a marriage of fake and faith. Fortunately some, if not many, scientists still have faith. Yet the rebellious among them, those who also say “we will not have this man rule over us,” continue the religion of their cohorts (humanism) by using the CE, Common Era designation.

Political

Scientists are supposed to be the epitome of reasoned thought. Other intellectuals are also, supposedly, of the same mould. Yet these wise and enlightened people have chosen to continue to divide the stream of time into two parts. Our time of two thousand years called the Common Era and the earlier part of history called Before the Common Era. Yet there is nothing that signifies why that division is necessary. There is no sociological event, no scientific breakthrough, no cataclysmic event that shouts down to us through time that “this, whatever it is,” has changed the world. Without the birth of Jesus, there is nothing to point at. It is simply an easy arbitrary choice. It is simply a political point for the politically correct, for they have no point of value from which to measure.

Reasoned thought? Not at all. Just an unbelieving, disrespectful act towards Jesus, his values and those who follow him. That is the basis on which the politically correct take their stance. They want to change the times and the seasons… or at least the names of them… so that they have the freedom to do whatever they desire. It isn’t even Anarchy. It is too well controlled and defined. AD/BC or CE/BCE? It was just the opening salvo in the Culture War.

Fear Silencing Dissent

Fear Silencing Dissent

Recently Sun News Media did an interview with Margie Gillis. See my last blog entry: http://christianmuse.com/blogs/?p=752 about my thoughts on the interview. What worries me is the actions taken by some members of the arts community and their supporters. They have sent in complaints to the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunication Commission) and the CBSC (Canadian Broadcast Standards Council) to try and muzzle The Sun News Network. Perhaps even get them to loose their licence. This is no different than people or organizations using the Human Rights Committees to attack people with whom they disagree.

Why am I concerned? Simply put, I worry that I may say something that would offend an individual or group and the heavy fist of government would take aim to smash me. I am not rich but on a Canada Disability Pension. If I have to procure the services of a lawyer to defend myself against an accusation it would ruin me and my wife. It would not matter if the accusation was unfounded. The process itself would destroy us simply by starting. Unless of course I pay a fine to the government and damages to the aggrieved party before the process goes too far. I have heard that many take this option because it is cheaper than fighting. The little guy with a blog is never the winner once the machinery starts to grind.

Do I write things that offend? It is hard to write something that wouldn’t offend someone, somewhere at some point in time. After I write I check my spelling. I check my grammar. I then spend more time trying to make my written offering as least offensive as I can while still trying to get the message across. I would do this without the threat that hangs over all who dare to express a politically incorrect opinion. Yet the threat is there! Sometimes I bite my tongue, I close the authoring program, I stay silent lest I should offend.

Why go silent? Fear! I would like to think that we live in a society that encourages discussion between differing ideas. I would be wrong. The freedom to dissent has been slowly eroding away for decades. How many pastors are afraid to take a firm stand on the issue of homosexuality? Politicians to speak about the potential dangers of Political Islam? Others to raise a voice on some hot political issue? Fear to be singled out. Fear to be ridiculed. Fear to be labelled as intolerant: Homophobic, Islamaphobic or any other mis-characterising label. The fear you might lose your ability (your right?) to express ideas through the internet, radio, television or print media. To lose your limited wealth. To lose your physical freedom.

Hate Speech? I am not talking about a “freedom” to incite hatred for an individual or a group, whoever they are, and seek to do them harm. That should never be allowed. Yet we must be able to express ideas and opinions that may incite anger in others. There can be anger toward the speaker/writer who offends the listener or anger towards a group who are the subject of that speech. Being angry with a person or group is not the same thing as hating that person or group. If something offends then perhaps that something should change. The things that anger some will never have a chance to change if we are too afraid to voice our concerns.

Are we sheep? We must not offend. We must be nice. That seems to be the mantra on the lips of those who are afraid to speak out. It is also on the lips of those who would silence dissent. What then arises from all this false peace? Bondage, of our thoughts, ideas and dreams. The way of truth will be lost in our journey of appeasement. We will lose our right to speak in schools, societies, churches/temples/synagogues and government… or the street corner. Too one degree or another it has already occurred. If we lose the freedom to speak the truth, no matter how distasteful the subject, then we will lose everything. Only those who truly hate will then speak. They will speak whether allowed or not. They will gain power. Those who would enslave us will stand un-opposed. The false shepherds will lead the flock to the slaughter.

Nice sheep… Quiet sheep… Dead sheep!

I want to quote the last verse of a poem I wrote:

Silently my soul bristles within
for common sense is replaced by false reason.
Satan’s laughter rings in the halls of power
as the errors are visited on this generation.
Where now are the voices of reason and insight
to call a people to repentance and prayer?
While it’s still day, before the waning light,
stand, stand, stand against the night!

Reevaluating Islam, A Broader Look.

Reevaluating Islam, a broader look.

Between 10 and 20 years ago I bought an English version of the Quran. For the time it was written it appeared to me to be an improvement on the religions in that area of the world. It contained several factual errors regarding Christianity. As regards the treatment of prisoners taken in war, if you were a people of the book, a Jew or Christian, you were treated better than those of pagan faiths. Overall the faith of Islam as written in the Quran is an improvement over most faiths. It certainly does not measure up to Christianity as written in the New Testament.

Since 9/11 my understanding of the Quran has been challenged. I wanted to believe that the acts of terrorism perpetrated by those Islamists were done by a fringe element. As time went on I have seen many interviews, from Christian and Muslim sources, that simply told me that the conception I have of Islam is incorrect. I began to read other sources that I hoped would give me a better grasp of the true nature of Islam. I was saddened by what I discovered.

I would hear of a terrorist attack. I would implore the local Muslim community to stand up and disassociate themselves from those who perpetrated those crimes. There was no backlash from the Muslim community, in general, against those criminals. There were apologists and most others remained silent. It appeared that there were only a handful of Muslims that said these Islamic radicals are wrong in their actions and in their interpretation of Islamic Scriptures.

What have I discovered?

I discovered that only the last revelation attributed to Mohammed is of any force. If the later revelation contradicts an earlier revelation, such as would be found in the Quran, then the later revelation cancels the earlier. Therefore if you truly want to understand the religion of Islam you must look to the later writings. These writings would be found in the haddith. You can also look into the writings that describe the life of The Prophet. As Christians look to the life of Jesus to see how the Scriptures are to come to life, Muslims must look to the life Mohammed to see how their Scriptures are to come to life. Christians look upon Jesus as the perfect man. Muslims look upon Mohammed as the perfect man.

The haddith and the life of The Prophet are a whole new set of revelations to me. It takes what is good in the Quran and debases it. It takes what is bad in the Quran and makes it far worse. How so? I always looked upon the Quran, first and foremost, as a personal, individual struggle to be the best man or woman a person can be. Secondly, there was a basis for law and government. The later writings turned this concept on its head. What is foremost is the establishment of world government under sharia law. It is the subjugation of the West and every idea that is contrary to Islam. It appears that the only peace the world can have with Islam is only a cessation of hostilities until the forces of Islam are strong enough to continue the struggle for world domination. It is even proper for a Muslim to lie to protect himself, family and or Islam.

Are these things true?

I don’t know for certain. I trust the sources that I have heard in interviews as well as the quotes and explanations from similar sources in writing. But how can I be certain that these statements, and the quotes taken from Islamic writings, are truly representative of the faith? I could read all of the haddiths and the life of The Prophet and come to my own conclusion. Yet even then Muslim scholars would say that I do not truly understand the writings because I have not read them in the original language. I do not have time, nor the inclination, to learn an entirely new language so that I could read a few books.

What is needed?

We must create new panels, new committees and greater opportunities for those with knowledge to share the truth. We must not be afraid to talk! Only with open dialogue can we hope to understand the true nature of Islam. We must not attack people for wanting to find out the truth. We should not arrest people for wanting to spread their perceived truth. It seems however in the West, in the heart of the politically correct establishments, that to raise objections against another religion or philosophy is tantamount to treason. Okay, a little hyperbole. Yet those who are on the religious right or secular right are always in danger of being ridiculed, marginalized or brought before a human rights commission.

Are we too afraid to talk? Is Islam a real danger? For some the answer is yes and yes. Of course for the rest the answer is no and no or some mix of the two. All I know is, if we can’t start talking openly and freely, we are the losers. It does not matter if the perceived dangers of Islam are true or false. Why? Because we would have already lost the struggle.

NuB1’s – The Way Station, End of an Era

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

I was looking at the main page of my website, Christianmuse.com, and when I came to the bottom of the page I found a small paragraph written. It was an announcement that I finally moved all of my material that I had hosted at tripod.com called NuB1’s – The Waystation, and moved it to a company called Netfirms under the domain name of Christianmuse.com.

The first page I ever created on the Internet was my homepage for NuB-1s – The Waystation. That was back in July of 1998. I had hopes of creating a special little site on the web that would open the door for people to enter into ministry and also a place for people to receive ministry without judgment. Sadly, it never became what I had envisioned. Oh I had plenty of links out there and quite a few number of contact points but it never bore fruit. The vision never died, it just got folded in to a different dream, a different hope.

Last night I did a search of the web to see if there was any evidence, any links remaining, of that first website. You can find NuB1 listed but now it is only listed for sites that use that term as an antibody. A lot of science has gone into NuB1 and there are many pages on the web. The only place on the Internet that doesn’t use NuB1 as the short form for an antibody is found on my new site, at the bottom of the page, as an indicator that the site is now here. Today, it is more a memorial to that first attempt to bring God’s love and God’s word to the net.

This small personal era is over, yet the dream still exists in a small corner of my heart. Perhaps someday, someway, God’s Spirit will visit me and what is hidden in the heart, like a little seed, will once again begin to grow and the two edged ministry will come to light. I am reminded of that Scripture, “unless a seed die, it cannot bear fruit.” Whether hope or wishful thinking, I watch the ground and wait.

The human remains, in the earth?
The human remains in the earth!

Good Friday Fish… and Feet to Match

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Came down the stairs several times during the night to give my body a chance to recover from inactivity. Feet turn an ugly red, blotches appear on the skin, pain (arthritic) dances throughout my feet and legs. Why mention this? On several of the trips downstairs I found a plastic bag sitting on the counter. Covered with a layer of frost making the identification of what manner of meat indiscernible. Throughout the night more visits revealed more of the meat. Finally my feet turn cold and, white with some dark spots in the flesh. What was the meat thawing off to the side? Well that happens to be Salmon sections. What I find interesting is that the salmon frost and colour turned out to be a match to my own feet.

I should have guessed that it was fish. After all, it is Good Friday… not for the fish though… and we are to remember the Lord’s sacrifice on the cross for us. What this has to do with fish has always escaped me. It’s a Catholic thing. I once knew the answer but lost it through the different incarnations of faith in my journey to find God.

So later in the day I worked on the fish and my feet and in the end they looked like a perfect match for each other. I love what the Lord did for us on the special day two thousand years ago. That the Spirit of God raised him up three days and three nights later is always memorable. I would rather have celebrated eating a Seder meal with all its symbolism, instead fish and fries. Doesn’t quite get to me the same way… until in the quiet of the night… the Lord visits with me… and we sup the spiritual meal. Thank God for the day, however you experienced it… for it was your worship. God bless the Sunday morning service and a chance to renew the Good News story once again.

Burning the Qur’an and the Hypocrital Response

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Hypocrites and Hypocrisy… Muslim leadership?

It should come as no surprise that pastor Terry Jones of Florida has finally carried out his threat to burn a copy of the Qur’an. After a mock trial the Qur’an was found to be guilty of crimes against humanity. This mock trial also found other charges to bring dishonor upon the book. It took 8 min. for the Qur’an to be reduced to ashes. There are many politically correct individuals who have called for Terry Jones to be charged with a hate crime. This would be a misuse of the hate crimes legislation. The world condemns the man and ridicules his little flock in Florida. They ask how can such an evil be allowed to continue?

One pastor in Florida has made a political statement by burning the Qur’an and the world condemns him. How could a person be so base, so full of hatred and call himself a Christian. How could he do what the world considers to be such a despicable act? Now comes the hypocrisy, those professors of light… that wrap the world in a dark cloak, and show their black hearts aimed at Christians and those of other faiths.

The reaction to this book burning in Afghanistan was a march that turned into a riot. A UN compound was overrun and many of the occupants were beaten, maimed, killed by Muslims. The Iranian government has launched an attack against the West in its presses. They condemn not only that pastor but the American government as well.

In Iran one of the presses was closed because they had the audacity to print that the government of Iran had just recently burned 600 copies of the Bible. Where is the out cry of the world against such an act? Where are the voices of the politically correct calling for the world, the UN, to charge the government of Iran with hate crimes against humanity? At least Terry Jones took a copy of the Qur’an that he owned to burn. The Iranian government however took those 600 Bibles from the hands of practicing Christians in their own country.

In general it appears that Muslims are thin skinned. It also appears, in general, that Muslims are willing to commit acts against other religious believers that they would howl if committed against them. This is the result of a darkened heart. Now am I saying that the Qur’an is bad and that Islam itself is evil? If I had to judge, on the basis of the acts perpetrated by those who are followers of Islam, the answer would then be yes. Why? Because, as Muslim communities continue to allow the radicalization of their religion to continue, the acts of the radicals and their misfit followers will only get worse. It is their acts, and their acts alone, that has turned so many people against the Qur’an and the prophet. The evil they do under the sun brings a stain to the name of Allah. When Jews misbehave, when Christians misbehave, the name of God is blasphemed. When Muslims misbehave, and do not live according to the Qur’an but by some twisted perversion of the words of the prophet, then is it any surprise that more and more people find Islam a perverted religion and blaspheme the name of their God.

Are we intolerant of Islam? In general, no! But we will not tolerate criminal acts perpetrated against others in the name of some religion. In the Arab and Persian nations all religions are suppressed, their followers are made second class citizens, they are harassed, they are beaten, they are killed and their meeting places are burned or bombed. It is not the Christians, nor the West, that are the intolerant ones. It is the Muslim leaders: religious, governmental and “the movement,” that are the intolerant ones. They are the ones that are full of hate while professing a love of God.

It is up to the more tolerant Muslims to fight against this abuse, done in the name of Allah. If not, they will be drawn into the path of evil… Just the German people were slowly drawn into that aberration that was Nazism in the 1930’s. If you refuse to correct your fellow devotees, it will only be a matter of time when the world will respond with force against Islam. It is up to Muslim’s to reign in the abuses done by their fellow believers. It is up to you to reflect that true light of reason, that Mohammed was supposed to have written about, in the Qur’an. You must carry the burden to correct the abuses, the acts of barbarism, for they are being done on your behalf.

Will you stay silent?

If so… shame!

Branded Outlaw by L Ron Hubbard

Branded Outlaw by L Ron Hubbard
Publisher: Galaxy Press

L Ron Hubbard is better known these days as the founder and past leader of the Church of Scientology. Before the church? An explorer, researcher, cowboy, naval officer, etc, were just a small slice of this man’s life. In the 1920-30’s he was a prolific writer of pulp novels, novellas and short stories. The subject material ranged from air adventures to westerns. I specifically enjoyed reading some of his science fiction novels. Now about…

Branded Outlaw, a novella, novelette or whatever the term you prefer is a western with a plot familiar to those who enjoy b/w westerns of the silver screen era of the forties. In size it is as wordy as a Reader’s Digest abridged novel, almost. No colour commentary to speak of, just punchy plot with a few twists. A man gets a letter from his father saying that his long time enemy has moved into the same valley. The son leaves Wyoming and races to the aid of his dad…

I enjoyed this quick little trip down pulp fiction lane. I don’t think it is worth the full cost of $10 Canadian. Now it was worth the price of $3.99 with an additional iRewards discount of ten percent. I have two more of these pulp books to read. They are nothing like the larger works of fiction Hubbard would write in the future. Of course if you happen to be a Scientologist you might want to buy his books because you like the man more than his writing.

What I found interesting is that the word Scientology does not come up once anywhere in the book. Even in the extended little bio of “L Ron Hubbard and American Pulp Fiction,” the religion is not mentioned. I guess they want people to concentrate on the works of fiction and not the religion… which many think is a great work of fiction itself. Having studied Scientology myself I would have to say the critics know nothing of the beliefs or the application of it.

Another interesting aspect of the book, as short as it is, is the glossary of terms used in the book. Its inclusion and scope reflect the belief that it is extremely important for people never to pass by a word they don’t fully understand. It is derived from Scientology study technology. I do wish I would have checked the list of contents at the beginning of the book. It would have saved me a lot of internet surfing trying to discover what some of the words he used meant. All in the glossary… who ever checks those things out first? Or at all?

Well this book report has become a little wider in scope than I first intended. I should stop before it rivals the book itself. (That was a little bit of lame humour) I am certain that you can find or will eventually find, these books in a second hand book store. The price will be about right for it then. Since Hubbard has passed away, if you feel like enriching his estate, you can pay full price if you have that desire.

In the end… I thoroughly enjoyed reading this western. That itself is all the book report you actually need to know.

😉

New Hope for Egypt?

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

muslim brotherhood seeking official party status

Egypt at this time has a secular constitution. How long will that last? People are already attempting to make changes. If others have their way it will become an Islamic republic. In such circumstances sharia law finds its way into the constitution and the end result is loss of freedom, beatings and death… specially among the non-Muslim minorities. Like Iraq and other countries Christians who can will flee oppression. The country would become weaker not stronger. I can only hope that the people of Egypt who want freedom, will remember their religious cousins, Jews and Christians, and recall that the Quran said to treat them with respect and dignity.

If the Islamic Brotherhood attains official party status…
If they eventually form the government…
What will rise in Egypt will be hate…
It is the nature of the beast.

Mubarak steps down…

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Mubarak has left the building…

Mubarak has finally stepped down. The VP is not going to take his place. The military will exert temporary control of the government. The people have the fist phase of their demands met. All this and yet so little actually accomplished. In reality they haven’t gone anywhere at all. It is simply a wonderful show where the good guys, the people, oust the dictator.

About the military

I can only hope that they will do their best to prepare the ground work to have open, fair and free elections. This is not so easy a task. The state of emergency needs to be lifted. But lifting this hand of oppression too far will allow other, more radical elements of the population, to cause chaos through intimidation. Perhaps outright violence against other political parties and those seeking office. Don’t lift it up enough and they will be setting the stage to continue the dictatorship under some other “benign” president.

Another aspect is what timetable? If you hold elections too quickly the people will not have the time to firmly establish their different parties. The only groups that would benefit are the ones who are already firmly established. As of this time the main party appears to be “the Muslim Brotherhood.” This particular political entity does not reflect the general values of the Egyptian population. If the military takes too long to hold elections? Most likely nothing will change. It will be status quo. Instead of a president who was a military man you will have a military man with the powers of the president. You will have, in either case, a false political body appointed by the man in power.

What if the military strikes that perfect balance of 1/ Lifting the state of emergency while holding in check the abuses of those who would hijack the electoral process and 2/ Having everything done in a timely manner? Perhaps you would get a fair and representative government. This, however, I believe will be short lived if the people don’t make a stronger stand for freedom… for all. The test? Whether the new government will extend full rights and freedoms to all Egyptians. Will the Christians, and those of other faiths, continue to be marginalized or will they be allowed to have the same freedoms and rights, protected by the state, that Muslims have… or will eventually have.

What started this state of emergency in the first place? President Anwar Sadat made peace with Israel. During a parade the Muslim Brotherhood killed Sadat by spraying the reviewing stand with machine gun fire. To prevent a revolution, a civil war, worse… a state of emergency was declared and the secret police went out to stop the group responsible for the killing of all those people in the stand.

The Muslim Brotherhood is still active today. During Mubarak’s reign they were suppressed. They do have a political wing as many others have. Yet they couldn’t advance, no one could, because the elections were in essence rigged. Now however, the wolf is at the door with the rest of the people. They want to have the doors of political freedom opened. If a fair and just election is held they will gain some power. The problem though is that they have no intention of working toward an inclusive government. From my understanding they set up movements that are dual purposed. One aspect is to help them take care of their own people. The second aspect is to exert physical power to gain (to wrest) control from whatever form of government they are under and place it under Islamic fundamentalist control. They seek to re-establish the Caliphate. This would be the political structure binding all Muslim states into one. Sharia law will become the standard. (Actually, the abuses of various customs, framed as Qur’anic, will be established.) This means that freedom, fairness and equality will be denied those who are not Muslim. That is not what the freedom loving people of Egypt are struggling to attain through their marches and protests. They may get their free elections… but lose the government majority once and they will be back under the heel of a dictatorial regime. It happened in Gaza. In some respects it happened in Turkey, though the military puts limits, as they always have, on the political system. How about Iran?

by hook or by crook

Revolutions have a way of opening the doors to change. When the people of Russia rose up to overthrow their dictator they were seeking freedom from tyranny. Yet within the ranks of the political reformers were those who had no intention of sharing power. They were the communists. They took power “by hook or by crook” They established a governmental dictatorship, an oligarchy, with ten percent of the people forcing everyone else to follow. The Muslim Brotherhood, as far as I can tell, want to achieve the same result. They dictate, you follow… or die.

The same can be said of Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany.

What passes for Islam today, especially the abuses, are not of the Qur’an but tribal customs and interpretations; the addition of the oral stories attributed to Mohammed to that which was written by the hand of Mohammed. The radical extremists and their organizations do harm to the memory of Mohammed and what he established here on the earth. I do not want to see Egypt, and its people filled with good intentions, sidetracked into the darkness by some brotherhood.

The army must preserve the peace. The people need to stand firm. They are traveling a dangerous road. I hope they find what they are looking for.

Mubarak has left the building…

…What is waiting in the wings?
